Introduction to Assessment
[su_spacer size=”10″][/su_spacer]
The purpose of the Assessment Section is to provide teachers with measurement tools to gauge the language proficiency levels of their students, as well as measure the growth of individuals throughout the instructional timeframe. It is predicted that most students in the summer school program fall into the beginning or intermediate proficiency band, so NAME OF RESOURCE provides a tool to establish a baseline to ensure specific, measurable objectives for each student’s achievement goals during the 4 week protocol.
Included are 2 styles of anecdotal notes to utilize as measurement tools. Anecdotal notes are based on observation of the students’ behaviors. In order to gather data, the teacher observes and listens to the students as they interact student to student and student to teacher. The first type of anecdotal notes is Ferguson Jersey a checklist and the second tool is an open note format.

Anecdotal Open Notes

The second type of measurement tool given is the Open Note form. This tool provides spaces for the student’s name, the date, and enough space for the teacher to take notes. When designated “Talk Time” is given throughout the lessons, an icon like this indicates an optimal time for the teacher to observe and take notes (minimum of two students) to record a sample of their current language usage.

Anecdotal Note Checklist

The Anecdotal Note Checklist is divided by language domain (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) based on the word study skills that are embedded in curriculum. The checklist should be used at a minimum of 3 times: on the first day, mid-way through the curriculum, and at the end. The Assessment checklists and accompanying directions are included in this section. We recommend use of a distinctive color pen or marker to coordinate each assessment date with its matching checkmark. Tracking the progression of checkmarks across proficiency levels will assist the teacher in measuring student progress.
